GMC Hummer EV 2022

The Hummer EV is powered by GM's innovative Ultium battery-pack technology and has a range of 329 miles per charge.

GMC says that the Hummer's 800-volt electrical design with 350-kilowatt fast-charging capacity will add 100 miles of range in only 10 minutes.

In an odd turn of events, GM's gas-guzzling Hummer brand, which was discontinued in 2010, is due to resurface in 2022 as an all-electric GMC sub-brand.

The rebuilt Hummer will debut as a pickup truck initially, followed by an SUV. The new truck is a beast, with up to 1000 horsepower from its top engine option, which employs three electric motors, a range of 329 miles on a single charge, and a stated time of 3.0 seconds to 60 mph.

The Hummer EV also includes detachable top panels, air suspension that can be adjusted, and a sophisticated four-wheel steering system that allows it to "crab" sideways (drive diagonally), all of which should make it entertaining to drive off-road.

Electric pickup trucks are the next frontier for electric vehicles, with upstarts Rivian and Tesla, as well as large manufacturers such as Ford, seeking to enter this rapidly growing segment.

What's New for the Year 2022?

Despite the fact that Hummer is a well-known brand, the Hummer EV will be a first for GMC. Only the most expensive Edition 1 model will be available at first; less expensive trims will be available starting in 2022.

Only the top-tier Edition 1 trim will be available at launch, with a six-figure price tag. All the features found on the Hummer EV are standard, including adjustable air suspension, Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving mode, a power-operated tonne cover, and a big 13.4-inch multimedia display.

The Hummer EV3X will be ready in the fall of 2022, followed by the Hummer EV2X and Hummer EV2, which will be available in 2023 and 2024, respectively, and use a less powerful two-motor engine.

EV Motor, Performance, and Power

For the time being, the Hummer EV's lone engine option is a system with three electric motors producing 1000 horsepower.

All-wheel drive is standard, and GMC claims a time of 3.0 seconds from zero to 60 mph, which it claims is possible because of the truck's Watt's to Freedom launch control operating mode.

GMC also claims that this power plant produces 11,500 lb-ft torque, however that figure is likely definitely computed using the torque-multiplying effect of the truck's gear ratios.

While we disagree with the approach employed to measure the fake torque, it should still have a lot of pulling force.

The true torque number, according to GMC sources, will be between 1000 and 1100 lb-ft. We were able to take a prototype model for a spin and were blown away by its potential.

We're looking forward to putting the Hummer EV through its paces at our test track, and we'll report back as soon as we can with our results.

Capacity for towing and payload

GMC hasn't revealed any information on towing and payload yet. To compete with Tesla's Cybertruck and Rivian's R1T and R1S models, the Hummer EV would need to have a towing capability of 7500 to 11,000 pounds and a payload capacity of 1500 to 3500 pounds.

Battery Life, Range, and Charging

The Hummer EV is powered by GM's innovative Ultium battery-pack technology and has a range of 329 miles per charge.

GMC says that the Hummer's 800-volt electrical design with a 350-kilowatt fast-charging capacity will add 100 miles of range in only 10 minutes.

If no DC fast-charging stations are available near you, the Hummer EV may be charged at standard public charging stations or home using the included adaptor, although charging periods will be much longer.

Real-World MPGe and Fuel Economy

The Hummer EV is rated at 51 MPGe city, 43 MPGe highway, and 47 MPG combined by the EPA. The Rivian R1T, by comparison, is rated at 74 MPGe city, 66 MPGe highway, and 70 MPG combined.

We'll put the huge behemoth through its paces on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route and share our MPGe and range data here once it's in production. Visit the EPA's website for additional information on the Hummer EV's fuel efficiency.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort

Unlike previous Hummers, which were mostly SUVs, the Hummer EV is a crew cab pickup truck with a five-foot-long bed.

Given the Hummer's price tag and the fact that its cabin isn't as large as GMC's Sierra crew cab pickup truck, the inside materials might be of higher quality.

However, a revolutionary detachable roof reintroduces a T-top–Esque form prominent in GM sports and muscle vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s, allowing the cabin to be exposed to the elements.

The clear panels seem like a regular panoramic glass sunroof when installed, but removing them and stowing them in the Hummer EV's front trunk gives the vehicle a convertible feel comparable to the Jeep Gladiator.

Inside, a moon-boot imprint on the dead pedal and speaker grilles depicting the Sea of Tranquility serve as not-so-subtle reminders of GM's relationship with NASA astronauts and the electrically driven Apollo 15 lunar rover that the corporation helped develop.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The infotainment screen is a big 13.4-inch display, and there's also a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The visuals for the Hummer EV's infotainment interface were created by Epic Games, the creators of the immensely famous Fortnite video game.

Although the high-resolution screen and complex graphics appear amazing, we noted some noticeable latency, which shows that the system lacks the processing capacity to keep up with the software's capabilities.

Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capabilities, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and GM's OnStar telematics system are all included as standard equipment.

Features for Driver Assistance and Safety

In the EV market, Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot function is the one to beat, but luckily for the Hummer EV, GM's Super Cruise system is just as competent and comes standard.

There are also less advanced functions like lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for further information on the Hummer EV's crash-test results.

The following are important safety features:

  • Pedestrian recognition and standard autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist is standard.

  • Standard features include adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode.
