The Volkswagen Beetle has reached the end of its useful life

Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico, is stopping the manufacturing of the last iteration of the Beetle model this week. It's the end of the line for a car that has symbolized a lot of things in its eight-decade existence.

What car should I buy in 2022?

  • It has been: a symbol of Germany's postwar economic revival and increasing middle-class prosperity; an indicator of globalization, sold and remembered all over the world; and an icon of the 1960s counterculture in the United States. Over everything, the car has become a design icon, comparable to the Coca-Cola cup.

  • The car's original concept — a rectangular profile with seating for four or five people, a virtually vertical windshield, and an air-cooled engine in the back — can be traced back to Austrian inventor Ferdinand Porsche, who was hired to complete Adolf Hitler's dream for a "people's car" that would expand auto ownership the way the Ford Model T did in the United States.

What is the best car to attract girls?

The automobile was based on designs by Hungarian engineer Bela Barenyi, which were published in 1934, and the Tatra T97, which was produced in Czechoslovakia in 1937. The mass manufacturing of the KdF-Wagen, called after the initials of the Nazi labor organization under whose auspices it was to be sold, was delayed due to the Second World War.

Instead, a huge new factory in what was then rural east of Hanover began producing military equipment, employing forced workers from all over Europe in deplorable working conditions.

What cars will come out in 2022?

The Volkswagen factory was sold in 1949 to the German government and the state of Lower Saxony, which still holds a portion of the company after it was relaunched as a civilian carmaker under the control of British occupation authorities. By 1955, the millionth Volkswagen Beetle — formerly known as the Type 1 — had rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg, Germany.

With 563,522 cars produced in 1968, the United States became Volkswagen's most significant international market, accounting for 40% of total demand. Doyle Dane Bernbach's unconventional, often amusing advertising encouraged car buyers to "Think small."

Unlike in West Germany, where the Beetle's low price, efficiency, and longevity symbolized a modern postwar normalcy, the Beetle's characteristics gave it a deeply unorthodox air in a car society dominated by scale and showmanship in the United States, wrote Bernhard Rieger in his 2013 history The People's Car.

  • Newer front-drive models, such as the Golf, took over production at Wolfsburg in 1978.
  • The Beetle, on the other hand, was still alive.
  • From 1967 to 2003, the car was manufactured in Mexico, outlasting its German counterpart.
  • The motorcycle, dubbed the "Cochiti," found a home as a rough, Mexican-made Carro del pueblo.
  • In 1998, under CEO Ferdinand Piech, Ferdinand Porsche's grandson, the New Beetle — a retro version built on a tweaked Golf chassis — revived some of the old Beetle's cute, unorthodox aura.
  • The Beetle's architecture was slimmed down in 2012.

The end of the Beetle comes as Volkswagen recovers from a fiasco involving vehicles that were rigged to cheat on diesel pollution standards. The firm is preparing to commercially produce the battery-powered portable ID.3, which it hopes would have the same effect as the Beetle and Golf in taking electric mobility to a mass market.

After ceremonies in Puebla on July 10 to mark the end of manufacturing, the last of 5,961 Final Edition variants of the Beetle is bound for a museum.
